Empowering Girls Through Menstrual Hygiene Support

At KDEF, we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to stay in school and achieve her full potential. Our Menstrual Hygiene Program is dedicated to empowering girls with the knowledge and resources to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Helping Girls Stay in School and Achieve Their Potential

At Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF), we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to stay in school, thrive academically, and achieve her dreams. Our Menstrual Hygiene Program empowers girls with the resources and knowledge to manage their menstrual health with dignity, breaking barriers to education caused by menstruation.

Key Components of the Menstrual Hygiene Program

1. Sanitary Pads Distribution

We distribute sanitary pads to over 1,800 girls across 18 schools, ensuring they don’t miss school during menstruation. Access to sanitary products helps girls maintain their education without interruptions.

2. Health Education Workshops

Through community-based education workshops, we aim to:

•Break taboos surrounding menstruation.

•Teach both girls and boys about menstrual health and hygiene.

•Create an environment where girls feel empowered to thrive.

3. Monitoring and Evaluation

Regular monitoring and data analysis ensure the program’s effectiveness. This helps us identify areas for improvement and ensures the initiative continues to succeed.

Making an Impact in Marsabit and Samburu Counties

KDEF currently supports 32 primary schools across Marsabit and Samburu Counties, spanning a rural and remote region of 91,000 square miles. This initiative is transforming lives by keeping girls in school and empowering them to achieve their dreams.

The Results Speak for Themselves

At Korr Primary School, the Deputy Headmistress reported a dramatic change: •Before 2014, 50% of female students missed up to one week of school each month due to menstruation. •After the distribution of Opportunity Kits, absenteeism dropped to 10%.

Why Your Support Matters

Every $20 kit can change a young girl’s life forever. By keeping girls in school, we’re helping them: • Complete their education. • Secure better jobs. • Contribute to the economic stability of their families and communities.
