KDEF School Feeding Program: Nourishing Minds, Building Futures

At KDEF, we understand that nutrition is the foundation of a child’s success in education. Hunger can hinder concentration, lower academic performance, and impact overall well-being. Our School Feeding Program is designed to address these challenges by providing children with balanced, nutritious meals, ensuring they stay focused and excel in school.

Empowering Education; One Plate at a time.

Nutrition plays a vital role in a child’s ability to focus and succeed in school. Our school feeding program provides children with balanced, nutritious meals, ensuring that hunger does not stand in the way of their education. This program helps improve concentration, academic performance, and overall well-being.

Key Components of the School Feeding Program

1. Food Handlers Workshop

To maintain the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and nutrition, we organize periodic 3-day workshops for school cooks at our center in Ngurunit. These workshops equip food handlers with the knowledge and skills to prepare safe and nutritious meals that meet students’ dietary needs.

2. Food Distribution

We efficiently distribute dry food supplies to 22 schools across Marsabit and Samburu counties, benefiting over 1,400 students. This ensures that students receive consistent meals that support their health and academic performance.

3. Monitoring and Evaluation

Through regular data collection and analysis, we evaluate the program’s effectiveness, identify areas for improvement, and ensure the initiative continues to succeed in supporting children’s education.

Our Innovative Initiatives Addressing Hunger and Education

1. Livestock for School Fees Program

This innovative initiative was launched during a devastating three-year drought to address food insecurity and educational barriers. Here’s how it works:

•Parents sell goats to KDEF for $20.

•Schools match the amount, adding $20 to the family’s account, covering one term’s school fees.

•Donated goats are used to supplement school lunches, ensuring students receive nutritious meals.

In 2022, this program kept 2,100 students in school during Term 1, and plans are underway to expand it regionally.

2. Food Vouchers for University Students

In 2023, we introduced food vouchers to support university students from Marsabit and Samburu Counties struggling due to the drought-induced economic crisis. Key highlights:

1,200 vouchers, each worth $25, were distributed to students, helping them access basic necessities and continue their studies.

3. Food Hamper Program

To support families affected by severe drought:

•We delivered food hampers to 3,200 families who lost up to 80% of their livestock.

•These hampers provide a critical lifeline for families in Samburu and Marsabit Counties, ensuring survival and resilience during challenging times.

Impact of the KDEF Feeding Programs

Our programs go beyond alleviating hunger—they empower students to stay in school and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. By addressing the intertwined challenges of food insecurity and education, KDEF is transforming lives in Northern Kenya.
