Transforming Lives Through Water and Sanitation: Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF)
Access to clean water and proper sanitation is essential for healthy and thriving communities. KDEF’s Water and Sanitation Program tackles the challenge of water scarcity in Northern Kenya through sustainable solutions.
Water Scarcity Solutions in Northern Kenya
Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF) is revolutionizing access to clean water and sanitation in Northern Kenya. Our water and sanitation program addresses the critical issue of water scarcity, transforming communities and improving livelihoods. In Karare village, KDEF funded the drilling of one of the deepest boreholes in Kenya, reaching an impressive 520 meters to secure a sustainable water source. This groundbreaking project provides a reliable, year-round supply of clean water, enhancing health and hygiene for the entire community.

Key Water and Sanitation Initiatives
KDEF’s commitment to sustainable water access and sanitation includes the following innovative projects:
1. Borehole Drilling
We provide sustainable, long-term access to clean water by drilling boreholes in schools and communities. These boreholes offer a reliable water source, even in the driest conditions.
2. Rainwater Harvesting Systems
Rainwater harvesting ensures communities can collect and store water during the rainy season, creating a dependable source during dry periods.
3. Masonry Water Tanks
Durable and long-lasting masonry tanks are constructed to store harvested rainwater and borehole water, ensuring year-round water availability.
4. Rehabilitation of Shallow Wells
KDEF rehabilitates shallow wells to restore their functionality, improving access to safe water in areas where other water sources are scarce. This strengthens local water infrastructure and ensures a consistent supply for daily needs.

Creating a Ripple Effect of Hope
The Karare borehole project is more than a source of water—it’s a lifeline for the community. With improved health, hygiene, and sanitation, KDEF is breaking the cycle of water scarcity and setting the stage for long-term development in Northern Kenya’s drylands.
Our mission is to provide sustainable water solutions that promote hygiene, reduce preventable diseases, and empower communities with the tools for a healthier, more secure future.
