Students
Excited. Nervous. Eager. Blessed. These are typical feelings expressed by some of our students as they arrive for their first day of high school. For all of them, this is their first time away from home. The scenes are similar to ones we’ve all experienced or witnessed ourselves: a parent helping their child carry bags of personal belongings, kids toting bedding, meeting new classmates, starting to settle in. Some of our students arrive alone and were it not for KDEF having supplied them with needed items, they would have arrived empty-handed. It is a big day for all of them. After all, it is the fulfillment of a dream, the realization of a hope that many students harbored but didn’t dare to believe would ever come true. Each of them worked hard in primary school and scored well on the KCPE exam, a necessary milestone for high school admission. But in Kenya, that is not enough. A high school education is not free and without the generosity of their sponsors, these students would be facing a much different future. For girls that frequently means early marriage often to a much older man followed by pregnancies.
In order to see that our students adjust well to their new surroundings, Kura Omar, Kenya Country Director, along with the KDEF team, accompanies first year students to that all-important first day of school. Our program then includes follow-up visits to the school by Kura and the team as the year progresses. They oversee the progress of each of our learners and step in quickly if there are any academic or personal problems. This kind of individual attention makes all the difference for students that are most often the first in their families to go to high school. It provides that extra measure of support that is a comfort for students on their own for the first time.
